RPI and Union Capture League Titles
Red Hawks and Dutchwomen crowned 2008 swimming & diving champions

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men and the Union College women’s swimming & diving teams came away with impressive victories at the 2008 Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Rensselaer. The Red Hawks complied 839 points for the win while the Dutchwomen 904.5 points, nearly 230 points better than the second place finisher.

Sitting in third place after the first two completed sessions, RPI made a huge comeback, beginning with the 200-breaststroke. The Red Hawks took over first place as nine swimmers placed in the top 16 to pick up valuable points. Rensselaer occupied the top four spots at the race’s end led by senior Steve Hall (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown), who won with a time of 2:15.53.

This is the third league title in the last five years for Rensselaer, which won back-to-back championships in 2004-05 & 2005-06.

The Union women dominated throughout the entire meet, finishing 227.5 points ahead of second place Rochester for their fourth straight title. In addition to four individual wins, the Dutchwomen captured victory in all four relays.

Swimmer of the Year honors went to Union’s Kevin Kewin (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and Vassar’s Emily Love (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor). Kewin won four individual races and helped the men’s team to two relay victories while Love picked up four individual victories, breaking three Liberty League records and achieving three NCAA Provisional marks.

Diver of the Year honors on the men’s side went to RPI’s Matthew Culen (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) and St. Lawrence’s Jason Johnson (Newark, NY/Newark) while the Red Hawks’ Kelsey Manley (Southbury, CT/Sacred Heart) was the women’s Diver of the Year.

Wrapping up the awards were Rochester’s Vince Ness (Hyattsville, MD/Gonzaga College HS) and Emily Scott (Lockport, NY/Lockport), who were the men’s and women’s Rookies of the Year, respectively. Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Union’s Scott Felix and his staff of Matt Kavanagh and Tara Campbell.

TROY, N.Y. – Through the second session of action at the Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships, the Union College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams continue to lead their respective fields. The Dutchmen currently have 600 points heading into the final session while the Dutchwomen have 643.5 points for a dominating lead over the University of Rochester, currently second with 458 points.

Rounding out the men’s field in second is the University of Rochester with 555 points, followed by Rensselaer (528), St. Lawrence (214), Vassar (198), Clarkson (184) and Skidmore (118). Trailing Union on the women’s side is Rochester (458), Vassar (344.5), Rensselaer (336.5), St. Lawrence (307.5), Skidmore (136), William Smith (127) and Clarkson (116).

Union’s men team was led in the second session by senior Kevin Kewin (Brockport, NY/Brockport), who captured two individual wins and helped the 200-medley relay team to victory in a time of 1:38.76. He won the 400 IM in a time of 4:17.87 and captured the 100-backstroke in a time of 53.87.

On the women’s side, the homestanding Red Hawks claimed victory in several events, including the 100-butterfly, which ended in a tie between freshman Carly Antonucci (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and junior Aimee Catroppa (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake). Their time was 1:01.61.

The championships conclude later this afternoon in the final session beginning at 4pm at Robison Pool.

TROY, N.Y. – The Union College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams came out dominant in the first day of competition at the Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at Robison Pool.

The Dutchmen, which claimed victory in all five events on Friday, have 299 points heading into Saturday morning’s second session. They are followed by Rensselaer (247 points), University of Rochester (230), Vassar (119), St. Lawrence (113), Clarkson (94) and Skidmore (79).

Union's women have amassed 320 points and hold a 88 point lead over the University of Rochester, who sit in second place with 232 points.  Rounding out the field are Rensselaer (172.5), Vassar (157.5 points), St. Lawrence (143), William Smith (83), Skidmore (63) and Clarkson (58).

Several Liberty League records fell in the first day of competition, including in the 200-freestyle relay and the 500-freestyle. The Union foursome of Priscilla Wright (Wayland, MA/Wayland), Erica Fugger (Middletown, CT/Middletown), Maria Prendergast (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Kaleight Ahern (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) shattered the women’s 200-freestyle relay record with a time of 1:39.46. The previous record of 1:41.36 was set in 2006 by the University of Rochester.

Vassar’s Emily Love (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor), who is already a Liberty League record holder in two events, added another record to her resume with a win in the 500-freestyle. Her time of 5:12.41 eclipsed the previous record of 5:14.31, which was set in 2005 by Rochester’s Kari Joyce. 

The championships continue on Saturday morning with the second session beginning at 9am. Action continues with the third and final session that evening, beginning at 4pm.
